Overcoming Addiction; His, Hers, Mine and Theirs

Nothing will bring you up shorter than finding out someone you love has an addiction to a substance!  Except for finding out you have an addiction to a substance.  And how it is that the addict is always the last one to know?

Julie Ziglar Norman announced to her husband Jim that she was going to a meeting for people who are addicted to alcohol.  The next day he got involved in a 12-step program and never drank again….but less than 30 days later, Julie realized she didn’t have anybody to drink with anymore…and the alcohol problem in her home wasn’t her husband’s problem alone.

With twenty-three years of sobriety behind her, Julie knows what it takes to employ one of her father’s most famous principles, “You are where you are and what you are because of what has gone into your mind.  If you want to change where you are and what you are, you have to change what goes into your mind.”

Julie can laugh about the trials of addiction today, but her compulsion to drink didn’t leave her alone until she had been alcohol-free for more than a year.  In that year she learned how to run to God and others for the help she needed.  She learned the importance of being inter-dependent and not independent.  Most important of all, she learned that with faith she could happily live life on life’s terms – and you can, too.

As is the case with most addictive personalities, Julie has dealt with other addictions, including a three-plus pack-a-day addiction to cigarettes, and speaks in great depth on how to let go and let God take on what you are powerless to deal with.
